George Morland (Angleterre 1763-1804
Une aquarelle -fin XVIIIe- sur carton, représentant une jeune femme à l'index levé
Paper back with pencil scripture labelling the title as Louise by Geo Morland.
Despite a brief life, George Morland painted as many as 4000 paintings. He was arguably the most genuinely popular artist of late eighteenth-century British artists, copied and engraved.
- Most likely, our Louise might refer to Lady Louisa Manners (1745-1840) afterwards Countess of Dysart.
- A. E. Rea & Company 1909-1911 was located in Montreal on Ste Catherine Street - the actual site of Centre Eaton. Surface peinte: : 25.5 x 20 cm (10" x 7" 7/8)

A half-length in which the sitter, wearing a red jacket, delicate point lace fichu and ruffled engageantes, is gazing at us as if she interrupted reading, her finger still marking the page of a book laid down on a green velvet pillow.

John Hoppner (Angleterre 1758-1810) Early 19th century water color on board representing a young woman with a necklace of blue pearls.
Back with scriptures: label H. .M. CO.; numbers 2631 & 7415; title Countess of Oxford; name of artist J. Hoppner.
John Hoppner became an established portrait painter from an early age, whose court connections (king George III) earned him many prestigious sitters. His sitters had romantic and noble poses in the classical renaissance taste of his time.

Suzanne Eisendieck settled in Paris in 1932 where she met her husband, the artist Dietz Edzard. She had successful exhibitions in London, Montreal (Dominion Gallery), New York City, and Cologne, as well as joint exhibitions with her husband in Los Angeles, London, New York City, Chicago, and Palm Beach. Un jeune garçon ravi contemple les pièces de monnaie qu'une toute jeune fille compte dans la paume de sa main. Le panier de fruits qui est à leurs pieds pourrait constituer à lui seul une Nature Morte d'une excellente facture.
Le cadre est doré à la feuille d'or.
La peinture (1860-1870) reproduit fidèlement La petite vendeuse de fruits (1670-1675) de Murillo, exposée à la Alte Pinakothek de Munich.
Provenance:
Le tableau faisait partie de la succession de Ravenscrag, la maison que s’était fait construire en 1863 Sir Hugh Allan à Montréal. Plus tard, en 1940, sa belle fille, Lady Allan, en fera don à l’Hôpital Royal Victoria et, à son inauguration en 1943, Ravenscrag fut rebaptisé de son nom actuel le Allan Memorial Institute. Adam Sheriff Scott est un peintre canadien né à Perth, en Écosse, en 1887, décédé en 1980 à Sainte Anne de Bellevue, Québec.
Il s'installe à Montréal en 1912. En 1919 il devient peintre officiel de The Gazette et est nommé membre de l'Académie Royale Canadienne des Arts en 1942. Il fut le maître formateur de plusieurs artistes peintres dont Armand Tatossian.
Ses oeuvres sont exposées notamment à l'Hôtel Mont-Royal, au théâtre Saint-Denis, au Manoir Richelieu, La Malbaie, etc.

Léo Ayotte est un peintre québécois, considéré comme l’un des plus grands de sa génération. Né en Mauricie, il s’installe à Montréal en 1938, dès lors, son parcours s’inscrit dans la tradition des ‘peintres maudits’. Sans le sou. Il travaille comme modèle et concierge à l’École des Beaux-Arts de Montréal; autodidacte, il dresse l’oreille aux cours des maîtres et récolte les restants de tubes et fusains pour se constituer une palette.
Son style évolua lentement, il connaîtra la gloire et ses toiles furent saluées par la critique, mais ses périodes de rechute dans l’alcoolisme furent une entrave à sa réussite. Surface peinte : 89.9 x 69.8 cm (35" x 27" 1/2)

John Burr (Écosse 1831-1893)
An unpretentious and humorous genre scene - probably an argument over a political article in the news paper - in a small Scottish town.
John Burr (1831 or 34 –1893) was born in Edinburgh; he starts his career at the age of fourteen, entered the Trustee's Academy in Edinburgh in 1853 and began exhibiting. In the year 1861, Burr moved to London and exhibited 18 works at the Royal Academy until 1882. He died in 1893 in relative obscurity. Huile sur toile : 33 x 34 cm (13" x 13" 3/8)

Gravety's Manor is a romantic getaway in West Sussex, England.
Robert Pilot, born in Saint-John's, Newfoundland, Canada, was associated with the Group of Seven in 1920. He formed the Beaver Hall Group in Montreal. Member of the Canadian Group of Painters. Elected (1920) to and president (1952-1954) of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. He taught at the École des beaux-arts in Montreal.
Museums where examples of the artist's work can be found include: National Gallery of Canada, the Musée des beaux-arts in Montreal, the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec.

Otto Reinhold Jacobi (1812-1901)

Otto Reinhold Jacobi was born in Königsberg, Western Prussia, (now Kaliningrad, Russia) in 1812/14. Died in 1901 (Dakota). He was the official court painter in Hesse; the Russian Empress and the Duke of Nassau commissioned some paintings. Consequently, his work was highly regarded when he was invited to Montréal in 1860, to perform a landscape of Shawinigan waterfalls, commissioned by the Prince of Wales. He settled in Canada and would become president of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts 1890-1893. Jacobi was primarily a landscape and waterfalls painter, biblical subjects such as our painting are rare.
