Meuble à décor de moucharabieh en bois incrusté de nacre
Finement ouvragés à la main, de petits éléments en bois tourné sont assemblés selon un plan géométrique complexe de façade de maison avec ses colonnettes, corniches, tours crénelées, loggias et portiques pour fournir tablettes, nids et caches à ce bijou de petit meuble mural.
Trois cartouches renferment chacun un sage conseil en arabe: rabbi yasser «Dieu dénoue»; bel sabr tanal al maram «avec de la patience tu atteindras ton but»; wa la tou ‘asser «et ne complique pas les choses».
Comme base à tout cet édifice, les symboles immémoriaux de l’Islam et des Arabes : le croissant de lune et l’étoile à cinq branches figurent en nacre incrustée dans le bois.
Égypte, début XXe siècle.
Un moucharabieh est un travail d’ébénisterie en grillage serré qui orne généralement les fenêtres au Moyen-Orient. Il permet de voir sans être vu et protège du soleil; le mot arabe dérive de la racine cha.ra.ba (boire) car on buvait à l'ombre du moucharabieh où étaient placées les cruches en terre cuite qui gardaient ainsi toute la fraîcheur de l'eau.

The overall colour is creamy white featuring pale floral bouquets, and stylised birds surrounded by trellis and s-scroll leaf borders.
