The movement is signed by "Howard & Co New York".

   Antoine-Pierre Aubert (French 1853 -1912)
A French ormolu bronze statuette of a warrior, seated on a pedestal, signed Aubert, fixing his greave.
After a mid-18th century composition of the French sculptor J.-B. Pigalle Mercure attachant sa talonnière.
Aubert combines classical-mythological vocabulary with his warrior - dressed somehow like a roman soldier - with lion skin the traditional attribute of Heracles, better known as Hercules, the divine hero with extraordinary strenght. Two sphinxes bust emerge from his pedestal. Shield, sword and bow (?) at his feet.
The mingling of genre suggests the canon of the Second Empire taste and a date in the second half of 19th century.

In 1863, a Roman marble statue* of Augustus was discovered at Prima Porta, near Rome.
Our bronze statue is a remarkable copy made shortly after its discovery by A. Röhrich.
The Augustus statue shows him as a victorious general making a speech, posed in the traditional Polykleitan controposto manner.
On its breastplate, scenes of the Roman victory over the Parthians and at his feet Eros is riding a dolphin: a reminder of his naval victory over Mark Antony and Cleopatra at the Battle of Actium or, through his adoption by Julius Caesar, that he belongs to patrician family the gens julia therefore with Venus ancestry.
