Bas-relief cast in bronze with black patina by the lost wax process
Signed and numbered 'Renoir 19/20' lower right and stamped with foundry mark 'C.Valsuani cire perdue' underneath base.
Modeled by Morel under the direction of Renoir and from his drawings, in 1918
Cast in an edition of twenty for Renou et Colle, Paris, by founder Valsuani, in 1950
60 x 43 x 5 cm (20” 5/8 x 17” x 2”)

In 1918, Renoir engaged the young sculptor Louis Morel, together they created terracotta high reliefs on Dionysian themes.
"It is a moving fact that the very last sculptures of this old man, who was paralyzed and not far from his end, evoked music and dance" (Haesaerts, Renoir Sculpteur, New York, 1947, p. 33).
