Seiler studied initially at the Berlin Academy and later in Munich.
Before establishing himself as an artist in Munich, he served as an officer during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870.
Seiler was professor and a member at the Berlin Academy, honoured member of Munich Academy since 1890.
He exhibited in Paris in 1903 for which he received a honourable mention.
Seiler was a renowned German artist often depicting historical or military scenes, he also painted a wide variety of genre compositions, always executed in exquisite detail, demonstrating his skill at capturing the textures of wood, fabric, glass and porcelain alongside his remarkable portrayal of the expression of each figure.
